According to Prensky, what is the immigrant/native divide, and how has it affected how students learn?
Marc Prensky states that the current generation of students is the first to have grown up with technology. They have grown up immersed in and making use of digital era gadgets all of their lives. Prensky refers to these individuals as "Digital Natives," and the remaining individuals who did not grow up in a digital environment but have embraced technology as "Digital Immigrants."
According to Prensky, this has impacted how students learn because many teachers are digital immigrants who don't understand their students because their early education didn't prepare them for life in the digital age and because they believe everyone can learn in the same way as them. For instance, they don't think a digital native can study effectively while enjoying music or television, just because they weren't raised with it. The immigrant/native divide is whether immigrants should learn the new methods or if students should be taught the old ways.
Kirschner some of the myths associated with Prensky's findings. One of the myths he discusses is that being a 'digital native' doesn't necessarily mean one is 'digitally literate.'’ What does she mean?
According to Kirschner, people aren't able to multitask, and despite having only grown up in a digitally connected world, students of this generation are not equipped to handle modern technologies in the ways that are commonly applied to them, such as navigating that environment for successful learning and building skills. This suggests that being digital native is not the same as being digitally literate. Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants - Marc Prensky.
