Oversharing Online
There isn't an ideal number of Facebook friends, in my opinion, that can help people's mental health. Even if someone only has a small group of friends, their mental health may suffer because they may begin to compare their lives to those of their friends. If they have a large group of friends, the same thing may occur, and it may even get worse because they may begin to use Facebook more frequently in order to stay up to date on what their friends are posting.
However, there are a few variables that may affect whether Facebook has a beneficial or harmful impact. A person's self-esteem may rise, for instance, if they post a picture of themselves and get a lot of likes and comments. However, if they only get a few likes and no comments, they may begin to compare themselves to their friends, who often receive hundreds of likes and comments on their posts, which could lower their self-esteem.
It's important to understand that people are only sharing their happy moments and that they have bad moments like everyone else. I think people are prone to comparing themselves to others on social media, which leaves them wondering why other people's lives seem so fun and theirs isn't.
In my opinion, social network platforms need to start taking action to support their users mental health. Due to their addictive nature and the sedentary lifestyles they have encouraged, social networks have contributed to problems with depression, anxiety, reduced productivity, interpersonal relationships, and sleep patterns.
I think they could start by adding reminders to the app that show how long you've spent using it. This could help users realize they've been on social media for too long and choose to do something productive in its place. I know this option already exists, but you have to activate it, so perhaps making the reminders mandatory for a week, then removing them for a week and then adding them back in a way that prevents users from becoming accustomed to seeing them and dismiss them without thinking.
Reminders would give people another chance to determine whether they actually intended to spend that much time on the app or realize they accidentally became engrossed and it's time to do something else. Maybe this could cut down on the amount of time people spend on social media. I understand that once you open a social network you become engrossed by it for the next hour and you lose track of time.
